Every day is Dog Day at Art and Soul. The owner, Chef Art has put together a fabulous Pooch Patio menu. Have your pooch try the gravy train, a solid portion of beef tips, gravy and rice. For small dogs, try the happy puppy, which is 3 oz. of grilled steak, or for bigger dogs, upgrade to the 6 oz. grilled steak. On a hot day, order bowser beer, which is a nonalcoholic dog “beer.” Try VitaPaw, vitamin water and homemade granola treats and dog biscuits — they will not disappoint. After Fido is taken care of, check out the people menu. Expect to find delicious southern soul food for human diners here. Its most popular food choices are mouthwatering mac and cheese, and shrimp and grits.

The owner, former pastry chef Liz Davis,has done an excellent job incorporating pet-friendly desserts into her menu. Reward your pup with a puppy pop, made with plain yogurt and peanut butter along with a choice of banana or pumpkin flavors. Not to worry if your dog has allergies, yogurt is wheat and lactose free and it has added benefit of helping dogs’ digestion. The squirrel treats, baked treats of barley malt, eggs and wheat flour, will have every dog wanting more. For pet owners, taste the area’s best brownie sundae or vanilla custard, but don’t miss out on the flavor of the day for a little ride on the wild side.

Jackson 20 Tavern is located at The Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria. Doggie happy hours every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. in the courtyard with dog biscuits and water bowls. To keep everyone safe, Hotel Monaco has several requirements canine visitors. Every dog must be leashed and have a rabies tag; no more than two dogs per owner may attend; dog paws are not allowed on the tables or chairs; and more importantly, everyone must behave and have fun. The Jackson 20 has great reputation for great bar food: The J20 burger or pulled pork sandwich promise a great time for people visitors as well.

Serving dogs day and night, Pat Troy’ s Irish Pub is one of the most established Irish pubs in the area. Its doggie menu will keep any dog’s tail wagging. Pooches are allowed only on the patio, but have a choice of tasty beef or lamb stew, and chopped burger or chicken. All entrees are served with a hearty bone. The most popular items on the regular menu are the Wash Island fish and chips and the Kilcormac shepherd’s pie. As your dog is chowing down, try Argonaut’s tasty beer and bottomless mimosas, a great bargain that’s worth every penny. Food-wise the cheese grits are divine and the fish tacos are unparalleled in the D.C. area.
